Transplant Games of America General Info

The Transplant Games of America is composed of "state teams". These teams play an important role in carrying out the mission of the Transplant Games of America of bringing more awareness to organ, eye, and tissue donation and transplantation. The TGA state team also participate in the Transplant Games of America event where team members compete to earn gold, silver, and bronze medals for the overall.

  • Competitor Division Information
    Transplant recipients, living donors, donor families and international athletes compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in individual and team/relay events. There are three divisions of competition in which men, women, and youth will compete against each other: Division I: Solid Organ Transplant Recipients Division II: Living Donors, Cornea & Tissue Recipients, Bone Marrow Recipients Donor Families/Living Donor Families DIVISION II ATHLETES MAY NOT COMPETE IN INDIVIDUAL SPORTS WHERE THROUGH ELIMINATION THEY MAY END UP COMPETING HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH A DIVISION I ATHLETE. THESE SPORTS ARE AS FOLLOWS: BADMINTON BASKETBALL TABLE TENNIS TENNIS VOLLEYBALL DONOR FAMILIES AND LIVING DONOR FAMILIES WILL BE ABLE TO COMPETE IN THE 5K RUN/WALK, BALLROOM DANCING, LYRICS FOR LIFE AND TRIVIA AND MEDAL SEPARATELY. TGA rules restrict Division 1 athletes from competing with Division 2 athletes as doubles partners. For Regular and Mixed Doubles, partners must be from the same Division. Doubles partners must be finalized before the registration deadline. Competitors who have entered a doubles event and have not supplied a partner will be dropped from the competition after the registration deadline. It is not permitted to change doubles partners after the deadline, except for in the case of medical necessity. Then, the new partner must be from the same team, must be medically cleared to compete in the event, and must not compete in another competition on the same day.
  • Age Group Information
    1. Athletes will compete by gender in the following age groups: 14-17, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80+. Children under 14 years of age will compete in designated youth events in the following age groups: 5 and under, 6-10, and 11-13. Age determination is based on the age of the competitor on July, 6th, 2024. 2. Volleyball, 3-on-3 basketball (adult and youth), relay events in track and swimming will be one open age category—i.e., no age classifications. All other events are age categorized. In doubles events that are age-categorized, if the members of a pair are in different age groups, the pair will be classified in the younger age group. If one of the players is under 18, the pair will play in the adult category. The age category of competition will be determined by the younger age of the two partners on Saturday July 6th, 2024 at Opening Ceremony. 3. Age groups and experience levels may be combined in the interests of competition and meet management, but medals will be awarded as per the age groups and experience levels of the Games. Events may have a maximum number of competitors.
  • Event Entry Information
    1. Entries will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. When the maximum number is reached, no additional entries will be allowed. No sport entry changes will be made after the registration deadline, June, 5th, 2024. There is no exception to this rule. Competitors may not add events on the day of competition. 2. Athletes will be allowed to enter a total of five sports but no more than one individual sport per day. However, team events (3-on-3 basketball and volleyball) do not count toward the five event limit, nor does the 5K Run/Walk. There may be cap limits on how many athletes can participate in each sport. 3. Athletes may compete in one individual sport per day for a total of 5 individual sports. These sports include: Badminton, Ballroom Dancing, Bowling, Cornhole, Cycling, Darts, Golf, Lyrics for Life, Pickleball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Track & Field, Trivia Challenge, Poker, Youth Olympiad (10 and under). 4. Managers are required to provide team and relay event rosters. These athletes must be medically approved to participate in those sports. Athletes are restricted to one individual sport per day and may not enter events that take place at the same time in different venues. 5. Failure of an athlete to appear at any event when called will result in the athlete being disqualified from that competition. 6. A competitor may scratch from an individual event and remain eligible to compete in other individual events in that sport, for that day, without being penalized. (i.e. swimming or track and field). 7. For events with more than one competitor, i.e., doubles and relays, each team must consist of members from the same team only. 8. For events with doubles competition in both same and mixed gender categories (i.e., tennis), competitors may enter one category, but not both. 9. Doubles partners must be finalized before the registration deadline. Competitors who have entered a doubles event and not supplied a partner will be dropped from the competition after the registration deadline. It is not permitted to change doubles partners after the deadline, except for in the case of medical necessity. The new partner must be from the same team, must be medically cleared to compete in the event, and must not compete in more than five events as stated above. Doubles and team competitions are restricted to State TGA Teams. If you compete with no team affiliation, you are competing as an individual and are not eligible to compete in team/doubles competitions. 10. Competitor check-in times will vary by session and will be communicated prior to day of competition. 11. Event check-in will be 1 hour before each event. 12. At the discretion of the sports director, an event start may be delayed up to 15 minutes. At no time will an event be delayed more than 15 minutes and out of respect for all competitors this rule cannot be modified.
  • Medal Information
    1. Medal presentations will generally occur at the conclusion of a competition with the exception of track and field and swimming. In most cases, donor family members are designated to assist with the presentation of medals. 2. Medals are awarded to the top three competitors in each gender and age group within the respective divisions. A competitor must be deemed to have competed according to the rules of his or her sport to earn a medal. Medals only count toward the Team Trophy if competitors are part of a team.
